Altea freezes licenses for new tourist accommodations for one year
The town of Altea, located approximately 10 kilometres north of Benidorm in the province of Alicante, has decided to suspend the issuance of licenses for tourist accommodation for a period of one year.
The decision, made by the Municipal Council, does not impact properties that already possess the required licenses for offering tourist activities. According to municipal data, the city currently has 2,200 tourist accommodations, accounting for 13% of the total housing stock.
The council aims to buy time to draft new regulations governing the sector. The objective is to conduct a comprehensive study, analyse any consequences, and implement measures to alleviate tourist pressure in certain areas of the municipality.
The local government has expressed its intention to promote "a more conscious, sustainable, and caring tourism for the town of Altea."
They believe it's time to reconsider the tourism model before it's too late, advocating for a seasonal and sustainable tourism approach that takes into consideration the well-being of both the local residents and visitors to the area.
