Tourist apartments in Alicante have increased by 900% in two decades
The boom in the holiday rental market in Spain is an undeniable reality of the past decade. Most provincial capitals and historically touristy municipalities, especially those by the sun and sea, have witnessed a relentless proliferation of private holiday homes in their neighbourhoods. In the case of Alicante, the city has seen these accommodations multiply by ten in just over two decades.
According to the Alicante-based newspaper Información, the legal supply of tourist apartments in the capital has surged from a mere 400 in the year 2000 to over 4,000 at present, after 23 years. To put this into perspective, during the same period, the city's hotel capacity has only increased by 47%.
The issue with this unchecked growth is that these tourist accommodations are no longer limited to traditionally touristy areas, such as the city centre or those adjacent to the coast. Holiday homes are now spreading to nearly all neighbourhoods. This phenomenon is adversely affecting many residents, both young and old, as residential rents skyrocket, forcing them to move after generations of living in the same area.
