3 killed and 15 injured in tower block fire in Alicante
In the early hours of this morning (Monday) a devastating fire engulfed a residential building in the town of Villajoyosa, in Alicante) resulting in the tragic deaths of three people, including a minor, and leaving fifteen others injured mainly due to smoke inhalation.
The Centre for Information and Coordination of Emergencies (CICU) received an alert at 2:15am for a fire in a building on Avenida Marineros. In response, they dispatched a SAMU unit, an SVB unit, and two conventional units to the scene, and the flames were successfully extinguished by 7:35am.
According to preliminary reports from the firefighters on-site, the fire originated in Apartment 1 on the eleventh floor of Tower 3, a 24-story building located on the aforementioned street.
Due to the intensity of the blaze, approximately 100 people were evacuated, while others were temporarily confined to their residences. The smoke and flames affected common areas, including the hallway.
According to reports, the incident has claimed the lives of a married couple and their young son, whose exact age remains undisclosed. Emergency medical services attended to fifteen people suffering from smoke inhalation, including seven women aged between 24 and 67, and eight men aged between 13 and 57.
Among the injured is a police officer who received on-site medical attention and has subsequently since been discharged. The remaining 14 people were taken to the Marina Baixa Hospital for further treatment.
At this time, the causes of the fire are unknown, and the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil are actively investigating to shed light on the incident.
